Currently, U.S. Army medical evacuation (medevac) helicopters carry the red cross rather than weapons. Other services’ medavac helicopters carry weapons and no red cross. This decision to not carry weapons affords our enemies in Afghanistan advantages they otherwise would not have. Additionally this choice has resulted in the deaths of U.S. service members as medevac helicopters have had to wait for available combat helicopters to escort them. Armed helicopters do not have to wait, and therefore, the wounded are able to receive life-saving medical treatment faster.
